Over 1,000 People From Violence-Hit Manipur Takes Shelter In Assam's Cachar District
In view of the violence in Manipur, more than 1,000 people from the State have entered into Assam's Cachar district to take shelter.
According to a report by news agency ANI, the Cachar district administration has made all arrangements for them in various parts of the district.
"More than 1,000 people from Manipur have now taken shelter in the district. They are now taking shelter in various parts of the district. We have made all arrangements for them in a few schools and other places. We are monitoring the situation. Assam Rifles, CRPF have also supported us. The locals also helped the people who came from the violence-hit places of Manipur," Numal Mahatta, SP Cachar district was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
Earlier on Friday (May 5) morning, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma directed the Cachar district administration to take care of Manipur violence-affected families that have sought refuge in the state.
"Several families affected by the recent incidents in Manipur have sought refuge in Assam. I have requested the District Administration of #Cachar to take care of these families," CM Sarma said in a tweet.
"I am also in constant communication with the HCM @NBirenSingh and have pledged the full support of the Assam Government during this hour of crisis," he added.
Manipur has witnessed violence since Wednesday with clashes between tribals and the majority Meitei community.
On Wednesday, violence had broke out during the Tribal Solidarity March' called by the All Tribal Student Union of Manipur (ATSUM) in the Torbung area of Churachandpur district.
The march was organised in protest against the demand for inclusion of the state's Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category, following an April 19 Manipur High Court directive.
On Wednesday evening, the violence spread from the hill districts to other parts of the state.
